Zero-contact testing: what changed after 2020, and what stuck
Mouthpiece-free terminals were adopted for hygiene reasons. They stayed because they screen a shift in minutes instead of an hour.
The throughput argument
A conventional handheld test with a fresh mouthpiece takes time per person, and the consumable cost scales linearly with headcount. A zero-contact terminal takes a passive breath sample in a few seconds with no mouthpiece, which is what makes testing an entire shift at a gate realistic rather than aspirational.
The trade-off is that a passive sample is a screen. Where a terminal flags a reading, the correct procedure is a confirmatory active test on a fuel-cell handheld, recorded against the same person and time.
What to check before buying a terminal
Terminals are infrastructure, not accessories. The specification that matters is the one that determines whether it can sit at your gate for five years.
- Sample method and how ambient airflow at the gate affects it.
- Identity capture — card, biometric or manual — and how records are exported.
- Access-control integration: does a pass release a turnstile or barrier?
- Operating temperature and dust rating for an outdoor gatehouse.
- Calibration access without removing the unit from the wall.
