If a breath test result will be used to stop someone working, driving or entering a site, the sensor behind it matters. Fuel-cell (electrochemical) sensors respond to ethanol specifically and hold their accuracy across repeated tests — which is why they are the standard choice for professional programmes.
Why fuel-cell for professional use

Where semiconductor still fits
- Lower purchase cost, so they suit personal or occasional use
- Sensor drifts faster, so calibration intervals are shorter
- More susceptible to interference from other substances on the breath
- Better treated as an indication than as the basis for a disciplinary decision
